From the Wall Street Journal Political Diary:
Some House Democrats are privately fuming at the pickle Speaker Nancy Pelosi put them in when she turned off the lights in the House chamber and breezed out of Washington for the summer recess without addressing voter concerns about high gas prices. By denying Republicans a chance to make floor speeches about the gas crisis on the day Congress was set to adjourn, she set off an ongoing protest on the House floor that has garnered much publicity. The Republican floor protest was a completely spontaneous reaction against her heavy-handed tactics. Since then, many Democratic Members have been pressed by voters at town hall meetings and radio call-in shows about why they won't allow a vote on the GOP proposal for more domestic oil production. "It's annoying," one Democratic House Member admitted to me. "We don't go back in session until September 8 and this leaves us hanging out there the whole time." Even more annoying to some Democrats is that Speaker Pelosi's rush to adjourn and leave town seems to have been motivated in part by her desire to start a book tour promoting her new memoir "Know Your Power." -- John Fund

Rep. Pence speaks to Erick Erickson of RedState.com:
Posted by GOP Leader Press Office on August 11, 2008
Rep. Mike Pence (R-IA):
"We want every American that cares about this issue to call the House switchboard at (202) 224-3121 to tell their Democratic representative to reconvene Congress and vote on increasing American energy"
Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA)
"We've come here to talk about $4 gas...we're dependent on dysfunctional countries like Venezuela  for our energy.  We need energy independence.  This also means increasing research for renewable fuels, nuclear energy, and more conservation."
Rep. Tom Price (R-GA):
"This isn't a Republican or  Democrat issue - it's an American issue.  Let's have a debate and a vote.  This is what American representative democracy is all about."
Rep. Tom Feeney (R-FL):
"Today, I returned to the Capitol to demand that Speaker Pelosi returns from her book tour and calls Congress back to session to lower energy prices that are crippling small businesses, tourism and Central Florida families.  Speaker Pelosi's dismal book sales have taken priority over the needs of America's hardworking families.  Pelosi wouldn't need a promotional tour to increase book sales if she simply titled it: "How I Ruined the Greatest Economy in the World." Over the last week, I have heard loud and clear that Central Floridians want a comprehensive energy plan that lowers energy prices today and maps out a plan for America’s future to remove our dependence on foreign oil.  Whenever liberals decide they are willing to vote on a plan for American energy, American businesses, American workers, and American families, I will be there"

Today begins the second full week of House Republicans' unprecedented efforts to reconvene Congress in order to address the nation's energy crisis by voting for more American energy.  Even though Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats insisted on taking a five week vacation, Republicans will be on the floor of the House speaking directly to the American people. How much longer will the Speaker deny House Republicans – and the solid majority of the American people they are speaking for in this historic revolt – a vote to increase production of American energy to help bring down the price at the pump? Members will be speaking today beginning at 11 a.m.   Please check back here and on Twitter as we continue to provide updates on the day's events.  Feel free to tell us how high gas prices are affecting you and your family in the comments below. From the office of Republican Whip Roy Blunt (R-MO):
WASHINGTON - House Republicans will continue their historic call-to-arms on energy next week despite the fact Democrats shuttered the U.S. House of Representatives for a five-week vacation before noon on August 1.  Since then, Republicans have spoken directly to the American people visiting our nation's Capitol as well as in individual Congressional districts - meeting overwhelming support wherever they go. Republicans will take to the House floor beginning at 11:00 a.m. Eastern everyday next week.
