Boehner to Dems: "Live Up to Your Word ... Give Us a Vote This Week" | Republican Leader Challenges House Democrats to Allow Vote to Ensure Congress Does Not Cut Off Funding for Our Troops
Posted by GOP Leader Press Office on February 11, 2007

On NBC's Meet the Press this morning, House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) challenged Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and House Democrats to allow a vote to ensure Congress does not cut off funding for America's troops in harm's way. Here's the exchange:

REP. BOEHNER: If you are not going to cut off troops -- cut off the funding for the troops in harm's way, why not allow Republicans to bring a resolution to the floor and let the House vote up or down on the resolution?

REP. HOYER: That's a good question and you are going to have that opportunity.

REP. BOEHNER: When?

REP. HOYER: Initially the first thing we are going to do --

REP. BOEHNER: When?

REP. HOYER: Within the next 35, 40 days.

But Hoyer has consistently said Republicans would have an opportunity to offer an alternative proposal DURING THIS DEBATE. Here's what he said at a press event last Thursday:

"The Republicans will be given either a substitute or a motion to recommit so that they can propose whatever substantive alternative that they choose. That will also be debated."

Asked today by host Tim Russert whether he would keep his promise and allow Republicans to offer an alternative, Hoyer again flip-flopped:

"Not necessarily our plan at this point in time."

There's a good reason Democrats don't want to vote on whether to cut off funding for our troops, and that is because that is their intention. They've said so themselves. Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Rep. John Murtha (D-PA), and others have already stated this is "just the first step" in their path to do just that. Will Democratic leaders allow a vote like they said they would, or will they renege on another promise?
