Boehner on the Radio: Speaker Pelosi Should Allow Americans to Read Bills Before Congress Votes
GOP Leader Urges Members to Support Common-Sense 72-Hour Review Period Before Congress Votes

Washington (Sep 25, 2009)

In a national radio interview on the Mike Gallagher Show, House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) discussed an effort underway in Congress to force Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to post all major bills online for at least 72 hours before a House vote to ensure that the American people and their elected representatives can review them.  Just 218 signatures are needed to force an up-or-down House vote. Boehner also discussed health care and the Democrats’ plans for a government takeover of health care.  A link to the audio of the interview is HERE, and the following excerpt below:

BOEHNER ON PELOSI’S REFUSAL TO LET THE AMERICAN PUBLIC READ BILLS BEFORE CONGRESS VOTES:

“Listen, this is really simple.  You know, back in January they wouldn’t allow us time to read the stimulus bill. They filed it after midnight and ten o’clock in the morning; we had it on the floor.  And then when we had the Budget we didn’t see it until literally the night before. And then they filed this 316-page amendment to the Cap-and-Trade bill—their national energy tax—at 3:09 am the day we were considering the bill.  And that’s the day I spent nearly over an hour reading portions of the bill because I wanted to know what’s in it and I wanted my colleagues to know what’s in it, as well.  So, we started this petition that arrived yesterday, it’s called a discharge petition because Nancy Pelosi won’t allow us to bring this resolution to the floor that requires 72-hours for every bill to be posted so members, the public, can read these bills before they are voted on.  And 173 of us signed this discharge petition yesterday, that if we get to 218 signatures, Speaker Pelosi has put it on the floor and it will make a big difference when the public can read this, and members can read it—they are going to have a much harder time passing all this garbage. BOEHNER ON SPEAKER PELOSI’S EFFORTS TO MAKE THE HEALTH CARE BILL EVEN MORE LIBERAL THAN IT ALREADY IS:

“The Speaker is rapidly putting together a liberal health care bill, taking these three bills in the House, and I think she’s taking it left of [H.R.] 3200.  And then she’s going to try to get the votes for this.  Well, let me you, she’s going to have a very difficult time, if not impossible time trying to do this.
