Boehner Statement on Supplemental Spending Measure to Fund Our Troops

Washington (Jun 18, 2008) House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today issued the following statement after House Republicans and Democrats struck a tentative agreement on the emergency supplemental spending bill that will fund our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan:

“This evening, Republican and Democratic Leaders in the House have reached a tentative agreement that will get our troops in the field the tools they need for victory.  I want to stress that we could have had this agreement long ago if the Democratic Leadership had not chosen to play political games with our troops.

“That being said, this bill is a real victory.  It gets our troops the funding they need for success – without hamstringing our commanders in the field with politically-motivated war restrictions.  It provides new resources to help our veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan get a better education, without raising taxes unnecessarily on the American people.  It also does not include billions in unrelated wasteful Washington pork that was added by Senate Democrats.

“Like the economic growth package we passed earlier this year, this legislation shows that when Democrats are actually willing to reach out and work with Republicans, we can get things done for the American people.”
