Boehner: FISA Agreement Will Strengthen Our National Security, Protect Americans’ Civil Liberties
Washington
(Jun 19, 2008)
House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement today on the agreement to modernize the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA):
“Modernizing our terrorist surveillance laws is critical to keeping our nation safe from attack, and this agreement will strengthen our national security. Our intelligence officials must have the ability to monitor the communications of foreign terrorists suspected of plotting to kill Americans, and this measure ensures they have the tools they need to keep America safe and protect our troops. Importantly, it will add appropriate retroactive liability protections for patriotic companies who helped the government detect and prevent terrorist attacks. And lastly, it will protect the civil liberties of every American.
“I thank Republican Whip Blunt, Reps. Hoekstra and Smith, and all Republican Members of the House Intelligence and Judiciary Committees for their work in crafting this legislation. It deserves every Member’s strong support.”
